I'm a fourth grade teacher at Scott Elementary in Salem-Keizer. Last January I became a member of the new Salem-Keizer Cadre. It's been exciting and fun! I already had a SMARTBoard in my room, and I've really appreciated the training I've had since joining the cadre. I'm learning to use my CPS system with Examview. I'm also testing a document camera, and I'll soon purchase one. What an exciting time to be in teaching!DSCN0001.JPG

I'm Tim Haag from Greater Albany Public Schools. I've already been impressed with the level of discourse at our table and it's good to hear other teachers concerned about how our students need to REALLY connect on a more productive and creative level.

Trout About

E_N_Trout_ponds.jpg

I am exploring how to upload an image of myself. A few weekends ago we took my son to the fish hatchery up the McKenzie. He was delighted with the trout pond and feeding fish. The metal fish was also where we spent quite a bit of time pretending to be fish.

Paul Nelson - Linux guy - NWRESD

paul_nelsonsm.jpgI was a teacher and tech coordinator for the Riverdale School District for a long time but now I'm a tech specialist at the NWRESD and I'm loving it out here. It's great to meet all the folks in the schools we serve and see the good things they are doing for their students.

I spent many years showing schools cool things they can do with Linux, but now I'm having fun learning to use a new Mac and introducing schools to blogging and Moodle. In my spare time I'm developing digital photography courses and working on taking great sailboat racing photos at PhotoBoat.us.

Michael Witnauer

I am originally from Buffalo, NY and followed a winding, scenic route thathas brought me to Prineville and the Crook county School District. I used to be an geologist in the environmental consulting industry, but needed a change. After moving to Prineville I took a job with the technology department at the school district in 2000. Recently I completed my masters of teacher education degree from EOU, just in time to take a job coordinating a new 1:1 laptop program at the middle school. IT will be a challenging next few years to bring our staff and students the technology and skills they will need for the 21st century. Someday I hope to teach science, but for now I have a skill set that is much needed for this program.

On a personal level, I love the outdoors. Rafting, camping, and snowbarding are just a few of the ways I spend my time communing with nature. My wife and I live on 50 acres just outside of Prineville and enjoy beutiful sunsets over the Cascade Mountains. For a look at what we look at, this is my personal website www.rock-n-rose.net. I haven't updated the site recently bu there are still many pictures.

Todd Hamilton

IMG_1132.jpgTodd Hamilton is Director of Technology and Literacy for the innovative South Lane School District (Cottage Grove, Oregon). Todd’s unique position supports his belief that the tightly woven elements of curriculum, technology, and leadership are essential to the success of each student.

Todd’s initial curiosity in education began nearly two decades ago, at a purely emotional level. “I was working as a camp counselor in Vermont, primarily because of my love for backpacking and other outdoor pursuits. I’d never been to camp as a kid, and I’d never really encountered a teacher who was truly inspiring,” he remembers. “So when I saw what leadership and innovative teaching could do for each kid, it really made an impression.”

After completing his studies at the University of Oregon, receiving his MAT at Pacific University, and teaching in elementary schools in Hermiston, Oregon and Eugene, Oregon, Todd looked to have greater impact. “What I found was that I was really having more influence on kids by teaching teachers.”

Since, Todd has shared his passions in the Eugene School District as Curriculum and Staff Development Specialist, Instructional Technology Specialist, and Project Director for the 4J Handheld Integration Project. He has presented at local and national conferences on assorted topics related to curriculum, instructional technology, and leadership.

Todd lives in Eugene with his wife and their 5-year-old daughter. Todd loves to spend time outdoors with his family, an unruly Pomapoo named Pip, and a magnificent mutt named Maggie. He declines to comment on the latest pet rat.

Nancy Warrington

I am the first full-time Literacy Coach in Klamath Falls, Oregon. Our district is committed to integrating technology into our Literacy Plan, so I am here. I was a Technology Teacher and Mentor in the San Francisco Bay Area for 16 years. My husband and I also owned and ran a summer school business which used technology at every level.

I have a 15 year old son and an eight year old daughter. One lives in the left and the other lives in the right brain. Our lives are full of swim and track meets, skiing trips, evenings at Lake of the Woods, dance presentations, concerts, etc. My husband is the IT Manager at a local structural engineering firm, which has opened three new offices since he started with them. We met sailing on the San Francisco Bay.

Too much technology?

I often wonder if we sacrifice 'real' experiential relationships for these virtual worlds of modern technology. Yet students are living in their techno world and we must adapt and provide adequate ethical foundations for emerging social networks.

Jeff Linman ...Waaaaazzzzzzup?

cadre 004.jpg

Hey There!

Jeff Linman from Milwaukie High School here. This is my first year in the Ed Tech Cadre and I am REALLY looking forward to it.

I am a Science Teacher (Chemistry and Physics)along with the Advisor for MHS Tech Cadre (www.techcadre.com) a Student-run Enterprise focusing on Web Design AND Pulse Media Productions (www.puslemediaproductions.com) a Student-run Enterprise focusing on Video Production.

For me, moving into the 21st century is SIMPLE....just GO! It is all about kids having a purpose. They can figure out how to use the technology to meet someone's needs (they always do :-)). It is Philisophical in nature.....don't hold students back, continually encourage them to use what they know to meet someone's need and HELP THEM!

I am blessed to work with kids that live this model daily........

Looking forward to working with all of you..........

J

Getting this out to staff is a huge barrier. How can we develop a list of proven, slick, easy ways to use all these amazing tools in a one stop shopping center?

I love technology! Give me a new technology, and I will play with it until I'm bored. Then, I want another new technology--a new toy. :-D

I am a technology teacher at North Marion Middle School in Aurora, Oregon. I work with sixth through eighth graders. Some say I'm crazy for working with this age group, but I disagree. I have worked with kindergarten through junior college levels. Give me the middle schoolers. They are challenging, but fun!

Did You Know?

What do we think it means to prepare students for the 21st century?-We need to teach them more than how to use technology devices, but how to use them with problem solving skills.
-Have all students learn at least one other language beside English.
-They need to know how to use technical devices for a variety of occupations, not just computers.
-Come up with a way to teach students that’s safe, but not restrictive.

What skills do our students need to survive and thrive in the 21st Century?

Collaboration/Teamwork – bring back that group work and provide students with strategies for group work. Make it okay for kids to state what their needs are during different situations. Help them realize what they need to work on and give them strategies for compensating.

Second, third, fourth languages!

How to Prepare Students for the 21st Century

Teach students how to learn and quickly. Use long distance ed.

Need to create in students an attitude that the knowlegde and skills they need will be continually changing.

Also teach them confidence to learn and do new things.

Students need to be able to connect what they know to new information coming out.

Students need to know how to learn, not just do. And learn what they to know what they don't know. And not be afraid of it.

Skills:

Students need to think outside the box.

Collaboration

The need to see the whole picture and not just one solution.

Creativity

Flexibility

Lynn Lary, llary@lane.k12.or.us
Instructional Technology Specialist, Springfield Public Schools

Let's see...I have worked as an instructional technology specialist since October of 1994(!) and have really enjoyed the challenges that I face in my job. Prior to this, I taught high school math.

The part of my job that I enjoy the most is the opportunity to constantly learn new ways to use technology and to see the creative ways in which teachers are using technology with their students.

Hi, I'm Rhonda Boles and I teach middle school math at Chehalem Valley Middle School in Newberg, Oregon. I am also a technology specialist at the school. I am a 5th grade teacher at Dundee Elementary School in the Newberg school District. I also am the Tech Coordinator for my building. I help trouble shoot hardware and software issues before the IT guys are brought in for help. I have been teaching for 13 years and am amazed at the new technologies we see in the educactional world today. Students have the opprotunity to experience the real world while investigating the world through technological means. What a combination to have! I also have the opportunity to share new technologies with the teachers in my building and offer support with lessons, integration, and applications.

The picture is of my cat, not me. What a rough life!

Multiple Hats in Rural Oregon

connie.jpg
Hello, my name is Connie Eastburn. I have been part of this incredible profession for the past 32 years. I have spent the past 30 years in Mapleton School District and have had the privilege of teaching all grades K-12 (except 5th grade). This is the first year I have not had my own classroom. In now serve as Elementary Principal, Title Coordinator, and Project Director of our second EdTech Competitive Grant project. It is an exciting time to be an educator in a small, rural district that is attempting to level the playing field for attending students and providing them experiences that will lead to success in the ever-changing world.

Nice to meet you...again.3/27/

Not much has changed in the past year. I continue to work for Salem-Keizer Public Schools as a member of the Onsite team from TIS. My passion is still the use of technology as a tool to make learning more relevant and I still believe that the use of technology in the classroom is a means to an end - not the end itself. I am a TOSA for Curriculum and Instruction in Technology for the Forest Grove School District. The job is still in the process of being defined, but I have been doing training in the use of eSIS among our K-4 teachers, GradeQuick for our 5-12 teachers, Edline for our 9-12 teachers, and SuccessMaker for our K-4 teachers. It is my hope that I can begin to visit classrooms to demonstrate effective use of our technolog including the new latop carts at each of the K-4 schools.

Currently, I provide training in eSIS and Moodle to all of the teachers in our district as well as administrators and office personnel. This training and support is both in-person as well as virtual. The staff make use of the documents that I have created to perform various tasks. In addition, they use the FAQ web page that I have posted. Another method of providing training is through the use of training videos that are posted on the web in the form of Flash files. These allow teachers to listen to directions and then perform the task before the training video moves on to the next set of directions.

Did You Know powerpoint

Download file

Karl Fisch created this powerpoint for his school inservice.
"I put together a PowerPoint presentation with some (hopefully) thought-provoking ideas. I was hoping by telling some of these "stories" to our faculty, I could get them thinking about - and discussing with each other - the world our students are entering. To get them to really think about what our students are going to need to be successful in the 21st century, and then how that might impact what they do in their classrooms. It would also help the faculty that are not currently participating in my staff development join the conversation.

pat's picture.jpgI am an old-new teacher. Many years ago in my youth, I taught for a three years but took a side trip in life and left teaching, getting married and having a family. After a stint as a school board member, my teaching bug resurfaced. I quit my job of 19 years and became a middle school teacher. Dealing with the public is excellent training for dealing with teens. I am now in my 9th year teaching language arts to 8th graders. And now, I am learning new technology! Who says you can't teach old dogs new tricks?

Technology Education Specialist and Title I Lead at the Oregon Department of Education

Prior to coming to the Oregon Department of Education in April 2000, I worked at the Oregon Zoo, OMSI, and taught middle school science with integrated technology. My current position allows me to combine the focus of Title I on improving student achievement with effective strategies for integrating technology.

I am a board member of the State Educational Technology Director's Association (SETDA), a George Lucas Educational Foundation Faculty Associate, and recently joined the ranks of the "pink ladies" at NCCE 2006 where I was awarded the "Making It Happen" jacket. Truely, it is the work that all of you are doing that makes me look good! Thank you!!

We have a great deal of work to do in getting the word out about the impact of educational technology on school improvement and increasing student acheivement. I look forward to working with all of you as we continue to innovate in our classrooms and integrate technology into instruction.

nsd.gif
Newberg School District

Chehalem Valley Middle School

31 years teaching from 1st to 8th grade
26 years of Middle school teaching
28 years of teaching some sort of remedial reading

I have loved using technology with my students. I started with hypercard-I still meet students who ask me about how they should be using it now :) I tell them I'M sure they are using Powerpoint and they smile.

I trained as a Intel Teach to the Future Master teacher and had a lot of fun. I also got to work at Intel several summers which was an eye-opener.

I am not a hardware person. I feel my job and interest is to integrate the technology into our curriculum and get teachers excited about trying new things.

I've been with the Salem-Keizer Public Schools for the past 10 years as a tech and have spent 9 of them sharing technology integration visions with teachers in custom and predesigned classes. My current passion is PreK-3 integration, but I really try to span all levels as the needs are very different and I enjoy the challenge. This year I am serving as a district level technician and an alternative high school building tech. My vision of the ultimate building tech is a personable, affable, non-threatening geek with the ability to not only troubleshoot & fix issues, but also support the curriculum with ideas and classroom support.

Rick Pass

Rick:flower.jpg

Let me introduce myself. My name is Rick Pass. I am older than many trees in the forest so I guess you could call me an "old growth". This is my 28th year in education. For 16 years I was a high school social studies teacher, athletic director and coach. The next 4 years were spent as a high school principal (grades 7-12) in Ilwaco Washington (600 student school). Since then I have been serving as the superintendent of the Knappa School District. This is a small district with just over 600 students K-12 and I love it!

My wife (Shirley) and I have two children. Our oldest son, Michael, is 28 years old with a girlfriend (marriage I hope soon) and a beautiful new home next to us. He works on tugboats working the Columbia River. Our second son, Brad, is 26 years old and is starting his first year in pharmacy school at Washington State University. My wife and I both work in the Knappa School District near Astoria Oregon. We are both graduates of Knappa High School and married as high school sweethearts two years after her graduation. Shirley is a media assistant at Hilda Lahti Grade School. I am currently the superintendent of the Knappa School District. This is my 8th year in this position. I previously taught here for 16 years before entering the administration field as a principal at Ilwaco High School near Long Beach Washington.

Hi folks

Hi folks,

I'm Len Otto, EdTech TOSA for the Reynolds School District. This is a first for Reynolds; we've never had a person whose sole job was helping students and teachers integrate technology into their classrooms, and it is an incredible experience for me on a professional and personal level. I have fifteen classrooms of third, fourth, and fifth graders. There are approximately 400 students in those classrooms, and we are doing exciting things.

My latest project can be seen at http://www.reynolds.k12.or.us/~lenotto/litforum/

I am excited by the possibilities presented by this discussion board, and look forward to seeing it grow beyond the EdTech classrooms.

I work for the Wallowa County ESD. We provide technology, special ed, staff development, curriculum support, and accounting services to our four districts.

We have special technology challenges to bring internet, e-mail, and computer services to districts where things like dsl, cable modems, fiber optic, or other 'broadband' services don't exist.

Ask me about setting up radio ethernet links with bighorn sheep walking by...

I'm also available for guided tours of the area anytime you want to come by.

When I was a teacher, I was one of the first to get a computer (there was no network at that time). Very exciting stuff! I see technology as a tool to engage students in learning, and am very interested in pursuing all different sorts of technologies if they make a difference to kids and their learning. In the picture above, I am doing one of my favorite things....helping to bring administrators along in their technology skills so that technology is something that we use every day, every where.

Director of Curriculum & Instruction
Malheur ESD

For the past six years, I have been the director of curriculum and instruction at Malheur Education Service District in Vale, Oregon. My job requires me to wear a lot of hats at any given time. My responsibilities cover assessment, curriculum, professional development, administrator for small districts, federal programs, etc.
I have been a part of the cadre for at least 4 years. This is my favorite group to work with. Mostly because I am not a "tech person" and I always learn so much from the rest of the cadre, which I get to share with others in my region. I always look forward to our meetings!

I have been working the last two years as a TOSA . My primary focus is to serve as a trainer for the teachers who are part of the Ed Tech grant in our district. These teachers are using wireless iBooks in the classroom to impact student achievement. Wireless technology has had a big impact on teachers and students trying to integrate technology into instruction and learning. Bringing technology right to the classroom is a big help.

My name is Norm Stewart. I?m the Principal for the Echo School District. Echo is a small K-12 school district with approximately 270 students. I?ve worked for the district for the last eight years. The first three years as the district?s physical education teacher and the last five as an Administrator, Head Football Coach, and Teacher of one high school class. Although the size of the district requires that I maintain a very busy schedule I enjoy working in small districts such as Echo because of the close relationships that develop between the students, parents, and the staff of the district.

Echo School District Web Site: www.echo.k12.or.us

Our elementary school has been a part of the Education Technology Grant for the past two years. During that time our students and teachers have immersed themselves in the technology. We have seen great improvement in student test scores and the comfort level of our students and staff in relationship to technology.

The Carde has given our district an opportunity to interact with other schools and ESDs in the state that are on the cutting edge of technology instruction. It has also provided opportunities to incorporate other district?s successes and modify those ideas to fit the needs of our own district.

I work at Deschutes Edge Charter School in Redmond, Oregon. It is a middle level program with a technology focus. This is our first year of implementation and it has been a great ride, but a fast one! I am constantly making lists and trying to stay caught up. I teach 4 classes of language arts, as well as coordinating the school with the help of 2 administrators. Being a part of OETC has been a real pleasure. I enjoy the challenge and it allows me to trade roles; I become a learner at each meeting, rather than the facilitator.

Hi everyone. I started my teaching career at Lebanon High School teaching Business Education. From there I moved to Eastern Oregon and did Help Desk Tech Support for the UMESD for 1 year. For the past 6 years I have been an Instructional Technology Specialist for the UMESD serving the 12 school districts in Eastern Oregon. The favorite thing about my job is working with teachers from all grade levels and helping them use technology in their classroom.

I've been involved with many different school districts in the Northwest; beginning in North Bend Oregon, Sprague Washington, Shelley Idaho, Lebanon Oregon, and most recently in Hermiston Oregon. My teaching experience includes high school advanced math and computer science, college level computer science, and currently teaching a couple of pre-service courses to aspiring elementary education majors at Eastern Oregon University. Through this all, I've embraced using technology into the classroom. Currently I'm working at the Umatilla Morrow ESD with several school districts in Northeast Oregon. Very successful projects in our area is the use of Moodle services into area classrooms, the placement of document cameras and data projectors in hundreds (yes hundreds) of Northeast Oregon Classrooms, and the laptop lab and Promethean Interactive Boards in Echo.

I have been playing with and integrating technology since my days as a teacher in Creswell School District, 17 years ago. I was also a Technology Director in that district. Now I am an administrator in South Lane School District. We have been working hard to get technology in the hands of all of our students. This has led us down several paths: We are in the 5th year of a handheld computer project that involves about 900 handhelds across all grades at every school. We have a state of the art engineering technology lab at our high school. We recently started a robotics club at a middle school in the district. And we just opened two inexepnsive server-based open-source labs.

As an educator for 26 years, I have watched our definition of educational technology grow from use of the thermofax and ditto machine to the integration of technology into every classroom. In my role as the coordinator of curriculum and assessment at the Southern Oregon ESD, I find the challenge of supporting educators with technology resources to be timely and exciting. Our ESD is a regional resource for online education, interactive video-conferencing, classroom use of Lexiles, effective use of library and media technologies, and other methods for using technology in school improvement. Our continued challenge is how to stay current with evolving practices while providing the best possible staff development for technology integration to increase student success.

Tigard-Tualatin School District

I am not only a newbie to the Cadre, but I am new to Tigard-Tualatin School District, as well, in the position of district Instructional Technology Specialist. I worked for sixteen years in Oregon City School District under many different job titles (none of which I could remember!), but was the server administrator and webmaster, in charge of OS X deployment and taught numerous staff development classes and workshops. After a month, I am enjoying my new job of being a cheerleader for technology integration into the classroom and think I am finally getting used to new faces and a new way of doing things. Even someone who embraces technology can sometimes struggle with change!

I was a classroom teacher for nine years, mostly in Beaverton, in grades 3-5. For the last seven years I have been working part time as a technology trainer and coach in the Canby School District. This has been a lot of fun. I love working with all levels of teachers, technophobes to geeks, and all ages of kids, kindergarten to high school. I am especially fond of training teachers to organize info with databases, to use Kidspiration & Inspiration for critical analysis, to create simple iMovies using digital photos, and to get the most out of the Internet. I am currently working with several school districts and with Discovery Education United Streaming on a contract basis.
